Chapter 3: The Lost shrine
'Ok, this seems to be the place.' Stated Sam as the group came upon an old stone path.
'I hope she's alright, from what we know she's been out here since yesterday.' Said Selina with concern. Taking note of this the others pull out their weapons and proceeded further into the forest.
oOoOoOoOoOoOo
'Ah Clear Sky, what can I do for you today!' Smiled Kvasir as Corrin and the rest stepped inside.
'Working hard or hardly working?' Joked Selina.
'what's that supposed to mean...? I'll have you know that I am a hard worker. I got dressed, cleaned the tavern, and set up the request board before I even got up.' He said standing proudly.
'Wow, you did all that while sleepwalking!' Said Corrin in amazement causing Kvasir to grin ear to ear.
'Who said anything about sleeping walking? That was all part of a dream I had! It just goes to show how work dominates one's life.' he said, getting a laugh out of the prince of two nations.
'All jokes aside are there any new requests to take?' Asked Sam seeing as the request board was practically empty.
'There is one that I just got before you all stepped in. Apparently a girl was seen heading towards the forest. The guards didn't stop her seeing as she was an adventurer but they did ask for someone to find her since she was alone.' Stated the barkeep causing Corrin to park up.
'Wait, she didn't have pink hair did she?' He asked.
'Yes actually, do you know her?' This got him to shake his head.
'No, but I did see her on our way back to the city yesterday.' This causes Dave of all people to speak up.
'Hmm, I noticed her as well. From the looks of her gear she appeared to be a medic like myself. Were not exactly the most adept at combat so she could be in danger…' he stated coolly.
'Then what are we waiting for!? Let's go get her!' Selina yelled as she took the the request from Kvasir's hands and ran out the door.
oOoOoOoOoOoOo
'AAAH!' Yelled the young medic, a pair of giant muscular flies had gotten the jump on her and had her surrounded. it looked like the end until suddenly an arrow pierced through both of them.
'There she is!' Shouted Sam as the group came leaping out of the brush. As they were about to reach the lost girl however another pair of monsters had arrived. The new combatants were both a horrific cross between mammal and reptile with the bodies of skunks and the head of snakes.
'Ice star!' Shouted Mili from the back, summoning a spear of ice that impaled one and grazed the other. Seeing that their compatriot was dead the last skunk snake lunged at the pinkett. This attack would never come to bear fruit as Dave cracked the monster upside the head with his staff and smashed its head open like a melon.
'What? I said were not very adept, not inept.' He chided to the others as he approached the girl.
'Hmm, she's fine. Seems we came in the nick of time.' He stated.
'Th-thank you for saving me!' The girl bowed.
'T'was nothing m'lady! Come, let us return you to safety!' said Wallerd with a smile. However instead of being relieved the girl begins to look even more worried.
'NO! I-I mean no we can't! My friend is still in there!'she shouted.
'Whoa, calm down we'll find them. what's your name by the way?' Asked Sam while comforting the girl.
'M-my names Birgitta, my friend Laika and I were separated before those monster's ambushed me…' she said dejectedly.
'It's ok, do you know where she could have gone?' Sam asked. Birgitta simply hands them a map and points to a spot on it.
'We were mapping the old ruins before we were separated. She most likely went to this clearing here…' she said worriedly.
'Ok, this should help get us there, but I'm no good with maps sad to say.' Sam said putting their arms behind their head.
'Fear not friends, for I was born with the gift of navigation!' Shouted Wallerd as he took the map from Sam. The group of seven made their way on the chartered path until finally reaching the clearing. There they find nothing save for a dog with grey and white fur engaged with a bloated purple wolf. The dog turns to the group when they entered and was viciously tackled by the other canine.
'LAIKA!' Screamed Birgitta as she rushed to the dog. The wolf begins to puff itself with air for another attack before Wallerd gave it a tackle of his own.
'Back mongrel! Now Mili!' He roared. No sooner did a bolt of lightning strike the Wolf, killing it in one blow.
'Birgitta, is Laika ok?' Asked Corrin with concern. It would be a shame if they failed to save her friend's life even if they were a dog. He's put at ease however when said dog barks and wags its tail furiously in front of him.
'She sure is resilient, a blow like that would have shattered a man's spine…' said Selina in disbelief. Right as she said that Birgitta gave Corrin one of the strongest hugs he felt.
'Thank you, thank you for saving her!' She cried. To Corrin she reminded him of both Sakura and Elise in how deeply she cared.
'Hey, it's alright. I didn't do much anyway, the ones you should be hugging are Wallerd and Mili.' he said, causing her to release him and go for the smiling knight and her fellow pinkett.
'Job well done guys. Let's get back to Maginia and tell Kvasir the news.' Announced Sam leading the way back to the city.
oOoOoOoOoOoOo
When they reached the city night had fallen once again. As the went through the town square Birgitta gathered the courage to speak up again.
'If it's alright I'd like to go home with Laika now…' She said.
'Alright, if that's what you want. It was good traveling with you and stay safe the next time you decide to go out.' Said Sam with a smile.
'Th-thank you, I will.' Birgitta Smiled before walking off.
'So with that settled we should head back to Kvasir and collect the reward.' Stated Corrin. The group then proceeded to walk back to the Tavern. When they arrive they saw Kvasir standing outside with a smile on his face.
'The guards already told me about the girl. Good job saving her four legged friend as well.' He grinned.
'We were lucky she was still alive. We wouldn't have found the dog either if she didn't give us this map.' Said Dave matter of factly.
'Hmm, is that so… you know the expedition pays well for completed maps of new areas, you should probably finish it since she'll probably stay in the city for now.' Said the old bar keep.
'That sounds like a good idea! But we'll give Birgitta some of the reward too since it's still her map.' said Sam. 'Alright, tomorrow we head back and finish where we left off.'
oOoOoOoOoOoOo
The next day the guild made great progress in mapping the new labyrinth. There they discovered multiple dangers such as a monster den and rancid water from the canopy. They also found things that would help their endeavors as well such as a natural spring and hidden loot possibly form the lost civilization itself. Now the party of Six rested in one of the clearings they have discovered along the way.
'If it's not rude, I'd like to know where you guys all came from.' Asked Corrin as he stoked the campfire.
'I grew up in High Lagraad, my mom was a chef and my dad was a survivalist like me.' Sam said 'My dad taught me everything I know about how to live in a hostile environment, can't cook to save my life though.' they added.
'You're right about that one Samantha.' Jeered Dave with a smirk.
'Wh-what!? You're a girl?' Corrin Gapped causing Sam to turn bright red and Selina to bust out laughing.
'Hahaha I'm so sorry sorry Sam, haha but his reaction! HA.' She bellowed.
'I think it's a lovely name my dear.' Said Wallerd trying to comfort the girl.
'I don't see what's so funny. That's just her name.' Deadpanned Mili who like always was engrossed in a book.
'That's it! Why don't you tell the new guy about yourself then Little Davie.' She sneered back. This caused Dave to go stock still and Selina to practically bust her guts.
'Hmph, if you must know My mother is Raquna Sheldon, a protector like Wallard and a member of house Sheldon in the Province of Ontario. My Father's name is Simon Yorke, one of the head researchers for the Midgard Library and a medic like myself.' He said exasperated.
'Well guess it's my turn then!' Said Selina finally coming down from her laughing fit. 'My dad was a highlander from way up north and my mother was a gunner from Etria. They were in the same guild as Dave's folks and had me a few years after they settled down. My dad's actually the one who gave me this spear, said his father gave it to him before he became an adventurer.' Said Selina with her ever present smile before turning to Mili.
'Hey Mili, do you want to tell him about yourself?' She asked the Pinkett.
'Not really…' she said before going back to her book.
'Ugh, fine. Mili here is a zodiac, and spends a little too much time looking at the stars. Here dad was an alchemist on the same team as mine and her mom was a war magus who worked with Sam's folks.' Selina explained with a sigh.
'Now for myself! I, Wallerd, have traveled to the deepest depths and the highest peaks of both Etria and High Lagraad and in doing so engraved my name into history!' He Boomed.
'You mean you're a veteran explorer?' Asked Corrin.
'Well yes…' deflated the knight.
'So now that you know our origin stories why don't you tell us yours?' Asked Sam. This would be hard, he can't exactly tell them the truth. The least he could do was tell them about his siblings.
'Well to start I have eight siblings.' He said sheepishly.
'Man, that's a lot of kids!' said Sam in disbelief causing him to laugh this time around.
'Haha, no it's not like that. They're divided by two families with four each. On one hand is my birth family with my older siblings Ryoma, Hinoka, and Takumi along with my younger sister Sakura and my mother Makoto.' He said.
' wait you're from the east as well? You don't even look like it.' Questioned Selina.
'I get that a lot, which brings me to my adopted family. On that side you have my older step siblings Xander, Camilla, and Leo with my other younger sister Elise and my stepfather, Garan.' Corrin said glumly.
'What's with that look? Did something happen between you and that side?' Sam asked with concern.
'Well yes and no. You see my real father was killed and my adoptive one, despite being distant and cold took me in for some reason. To me my siblings on that side may as well be blood related. Then there's my birth side, my family there thought I was dead for the longest time and when I returned they practically swore to never let me go again…'
'Wow…' said Selina as she held back a tear.
' the real predicament is that both sides hate each other and due to both of them being noble houses they think ones out to get the other!' Corrin yelled in frustration.
'Hey, just calm down I'm sure if you have them sit down and talk they can settle things.' Reassured Sam as she patted his shoulder.
'Thanks… I'll try to do just that.' If he can get home that is.

'Hey Corrin, do you mind helping me take this deer back to camp?' Asked Sam.
'Sure, are you planning on taking it back to the city?' He questioned causing her to shake her head.
'No, it would rot before we get there. I was going to skin and dress it for dinner even though it's unbecoming of a lady to do so.' She exaggerated.
'Wait, your a noble like Dave and myself?' He questioned causing her to chuckle.
'Heh, guess I forgot to tell you on the one trip. My full title is Samantha Dubois, heir to the house of Dubois in High Lagraad.' She states.
'Were you shunned when you were younger?' Corrin said with concern.
'No, nothing like that. The Dubois family is one of the most highly regarded in the Dutchy. My family has served as ministers for the dukes or duchesses of the country and my mom is widely renowned for uncovering the secrets of one of the greatest chefs from when the country was founded.' Sam said glumly.
'Your family sounds amazing. Is that the reason why you're so dejected?' He asked again.
'My family is full of odd balls though. My mother became a chef instead of going into the family business and my great grandfather was apparently a real jokester when he was the minister. The thing for me is that I always felt more comfortable with a bow in my hand then In my hair, just like how you go around barefoot all the time!' She smiled to him before she grabbed the deer's horns.
'Anyway, can I get some help?' She emphasized with a tug.
'Oh right, sorry.' Said Corrin sheepishly.

The parents of my guild members are all characters from both Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl and Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight. Minster Dubois is from Etrian Odyssey 2: Heroes of High Lagraad and served the same role as the princess in Nexus. Regina (Sam's mother) was an additional character added In The Fafnir Knight who made meals with ingredients harvested from the Labyrinth that gave boosts to your guild members and served as a way to trade for Grimoire stones (Stones that granted party members the abilities of other classes and even monsters). Wallerd's portrait is the one I used for my classic playthrough of both Untold and Untold 2.
